Why Do You Want That Goal?

 You Want That Goal?

Why do you desire that goal?

Transpose your chosen items onto your goal plan sheet and fill in the appropriate types.

In my opinion, this is the most important part of goal setting. List the reasons why you want this goal, and the more reasons you list, the stronger your emotional desire will be. If you can list 50 reasons why this is fantastic, you are already halfway there.

If you can’t think of more than two, consider whether you really want them. You may want it for someone else or because you believe it will impress.

Whatever your goal is, whether it is to run a marathon, speak a second language fluently, or learn to play the piano, you must really want it and have a good reason for wanting it.

You will be able to set goals that can and will benefit others once you become a master goal-setter. You must begin by developing your own personal belief system and confidence in yourself. You will achieve this by having a lot of success.

So often in my coaching career, people come to me with the intention of achieving someone else’s goal rather than their own.

I was coaching a client, and we discovered that his parents’ goal was to become grandparents and have a daughter, even though she would be the daughter-in-law because they were desperate for a daughter after having so many sons.

The girls’ parents shared similar goals.

Both parties had been trained to prioritise their parents over themselves; however, the marriage only lasted six months, and neither party received a grandchild.

Live your own life, not the life that someone else desires for you.

They may or may not have chosen their dreams, loves, goals, and ambitions.

Whatever happens as a result of their previous decisions.

Stop allowing other people’s unfulfilled dreams to become yours.

A dream must be yours in order to be realised.

Never let anyone steal your dreams or your motivation.

I recall hearing these words once and believe they are by Kahil Gibran. He is best known for writing The Prophet, which was first published in the United States in 1923 and has since gone on to become one of the best-selling books of all time.

I’m trying to remember what I heard:

“Your children are not your children.

They are the offspring of life’s longing for itself. They are with you but not of you, and they come through you but not from you.

You can share your love with them, but not your thoughts, because they have their own.

You can keep their bodies but not their souls.

Because their souls reside in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, even in your dreams.

You can try to be like them, but don’t try to make them like you.

For life does not go backwards or linger in the past.

You are the bows from which your children emerge as living arrows.

The Archer sees the mark on the path of the infinite, and he bends you with all his might so that his arrows can travel quickly and far.”

Suppose you have an arrow with a thread attached to it. Whatever the case may be, it will never reach its full potential. Respect and love your parents, but live your own life. You were born to win. Whatever your dreams and goals are, pursue them with reasons that come from the heart rather than doing something simply because it feels rational.

If and when you have children, guide and advise them, but never forget that your dreams are yours; let them be theirs:

Let your bending in the Archer’s hand be for joy, for as much as he loves the flying arrow, he also loves the stable bow.

 Significant Advantages

List the advantages that will excite you and truly give you a sense of satisfaction, confidence, and well-being. This, along with all of the whys, will provide you with the motivation, energy, and fire in your belly to overcome all the challenges you will face in achieving your goals.

I believe Ralph Waldo Emerson said:

“Without enthusiasm, nothing great can be accomplished.”

Enthusiasm is the most valuable and dangerous commodity. It has the amazing ability to grow the more you share it. The Latin words Ethos and Theos, which comprise the word, mean within and spirit, respectively.

So enthusiasm actually refers to the spirit within. Your enthusiasm can actually stem from your enthusiasm for what you’re doing.

Those who appear to have been weaned on pickled do what they do by rote or conditioned habit.

The people who move the world do so because they are enthusiastic. Make certain that  your reasons why and major benefits excite you.

A word of caution: If you’re not excited and have no fire in your belly, regardless of how you show it (you know when you’re excited), I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news: you’ve stated your goal incorrectly.

 Remedies

As previously stated, understanding the nature of the problem is critical to determining a remedy.

Before you can prescribe, you must first diagnose the problem.

The way the answers come to you is almost unbelievable, and you are always subjective and discover the answer within yourself.
