How a Bromsgrove Youth Football Team Inspired Confidence and Success
The Power of Visualisation: How a Bromsgrove Youth Football Team Inspired Confidence and Success
Have you ever noticed that the biggest battle we face isn’t always the one in front of us?
Often, it’s the one taking place inside our own minds.
Twelve months ago, I had the privilege of sponsoring a local Under-10s football team (who had just finished their season as Under-9s) for the next three years. I was invited to their presentation evening, and although they were a fantastic group of lads, many of them seemed disappointed.
They believed they hadn’t achieved very much. Some didn’t feel they had ever really stood a chance of winning.
Listening to them reminded me of something I see regularly in my hypnotherapy clinic.
People don’t usually fail because they aren’t capable.
They fail because somewhere along the way they stop believing they can succeed.
The Conversation That Started It All
Now, I’ll admit something…
I know very little about football!
So I wasn’t about to start giving tactical advice.
Instead, I spoke about something I know extremely well—the power of the mind.
I said to the boys:
“Before every match, imagine yourselves playing against your toughest opponents. Picture how you’ll move around them. See yourselves making the perfect pass. Watch yourselves creating opportunities. Imagine scoring the goals you want to score. Let your brain practise success before your body has to perform it.”
That’s called visualisation, and it’s a technique used by elite athletes, Olympic competitors, successful business leaders and performers around the world.
Your brain doesn’t always distinguish between something vividly imagined and something physically rehearsed.
The more you mentally rehearse success, the more familiar success becomes.
One Year Later…
This year I was invited back to their presentation evening.
I’d also watched several of their matches during the season.
What a transformation.
These weren’t just better footballers.
They had become a team.
They encouraged one another.
They communicated.
They believed in each other.
And the results followed.
This season they:
- Won several tournaments.
- Came incredibly close to winning the league.
- Finished just three places away from the biggest trophy.
- Grew in confidence every single week.
I couldn’t have been prouder.
Not just of the boys…
…but of their coaches too.
A special mention goes to Carl Bishop and the coaching team, whose commitment, encouragement and belief have helped these young players grow—not only as footballers but as confident young people.
Behind every successful team is someone who believed in them before they fully believed in themselves.
Football Is About More Than Football
Watching this team develop made me think about something much bigger.
Football isn’t only about winning matches.
It’s about:
- Confidence
- Resilience
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Learning from setbacks
- Believing in yourself
- Keeping going when things don’t go your way
Those same skills are exactly what help us succeed in everyday life.
Whether you’re at work, running a business, preparing for exams, speaking in public or overcoming anxiety…
The principles are exactly the same.
Success rarely happens by accident.
It starts with the way you think.
The Link Between Football, NLP and Hypnotherapy
One of the most powerful tools I use with clients is guided visualisation.
When someone experiences anxiety, panic attacks, low confidence or self-doubt, their imagination often works against them.
They imagine everything going wrong.
Their subconscious mind rehearses failure before anything has even happened.
Imagine if we flipped that around.
Imagine rehearsing confidence instead.
Imagine seeing yourself walking into that interview calmly.
Imagine yourself delivering that presentation successfully.
Imagine yourself walking onto the football pitch believing you belong there.
Imagine handling life’s challenges with confidence rather than fear.
Your mind is constantly creating pictures.
The question is…
Are those pictures helping you, or holding you back?
Think About the England Team
As I write this, the excitement around England football is building.
Some people will say,
“It’s only a game.”
Perhaps.
But there’s also something inspiring about watching people work together towards a shared goal.
Every successful team studies.
Practises.
Learns.
Adjusts.
Keeps believing.
If the trophy doesn’t come home this year…
There is always another opportunity.
Every setback becomes experience.
Every experience becomes learning.
Every lesson builds confidence.
And confidence creates future success.
What About Your Own Life?
Maybe your goal isn’t football.
Maybe it’s:
- Reducing anxiety.
- Losing weight.
- Becoming more confident.
- Returning to work.
- Starting your own business.
- Speaking in public.
- Overcoming a fear or phobia.
- Feeling happier.
- Believing in yourself again.
Whatever your goal is…
Visualise it.
See yourself succeeding.
Notice what you are doing differently.
Notice how confident you feel.
Notice the smile on your face.
Because every great achievement starts as an idea inside someone’s mind.
Final Thoughts
The Under-10s reminded me of something we all need to hear.
Confidence isn’t something you’re born with.
It is something you build.
Belief grows through practice.
Success grows through persistence.
And sometimes all it takes is one person to help you see what you’re capable of.
I’m incredibly proud to sponsor these young footballers, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve over the next two years.
They’ve already proved something important:
You don’t have to be the best today to become outstanding tomorrow.
Believe.
Visualise.
Keep learning.
Keep showing up.
Because you are capable of far more than you think.
